Once you find a Gemvara design you like, you have the ability to customize it with gems and metals of your choosing. We don’t begin crafting until a piece until you place your order, but our technology allows you to see updates to your piece in real time.

We are located in the heart of Boston, Massachusetts.

Our jewelry is sold exclusively online. If you would like to speak to an expert to guide you in your purchase, our Jewelry Consultants are available seven days a week to answer any questions you may have.

All of our jewelry is handcrafted in the United States, with the exception of our specially priced Moments collection and select gift-with-purchase promotions.

Jewelry


Yes. All of our jewelry comes with a one year warranty on the craftsmanship of each piece. Please note this warranty is void if the piece is damaged or modified outside of Gemvara.

We are happy to send you a ring sizer. To request one be mailed to you, click “Email Us” at the top of this page and select “I need a ring sizer” from the dropdown menu.

Gemvara uses industry standard alloys in all of our precious metals. In our Sterling Silver pieces, we most commonly use premium Argentium 960 silver, which is 96% silver and nickel-free. In addition to copper, which is traditionally used in most Sterling Silver, Argentium Silver also contains germanium, which helps to resist tarnish and adds durability. 14k Gold is a minimum of 58.3% gold and 18k Gold is 75% gold. The composition of the remaining alloy varies, but yellow gold is most commonly blended with silver, copper, and zinc. Rose gold has a greater proportion of copper to give it a rosy hue. Gemvara's white gold is alloyed with palladium or nickel (along with silver, copper, and zinc) and plated with rhodium to brighten the white color. Platinum and palladium are both 95% pure and hypoallergenic. For both platinum and palladium, the 5% alloy is composed of other platinum group metals, ruthenium or iridium or a combination of the two, which varies from design to design. All silver will eventually tarnish, but we most commonly utilize Argentium Sterling Silver, which resists tarnishing five times longer than traditional Sterling Silver. The amount of time it takes for a piece to tarnish is dependent upon the chemistry of your skin and whether you live near the ocean. Fortunately, a bit of polish will make a tarnished piece look as good as new.

We do our best to utilize only recycled precious metals. If you choose platinum, palladium, or Argentium Sterling Silver, we can ensure your jewelry will be a minimum of 95% recycled in origin. Though our gold is recycled, we can't guarantee the other metals in our gold alloys, like copper, are recycled. We continue to work with our suppliers toward a future of 100% traceable precious metals.

No, at this time, we only sell finished jewelry, not mountings.

Gemstones


All of our gemstones are AAA quality. In addition, they are almost all eye clean, meaning they appear without inclusions. Emeralds are an exception, as they almost always feature visible inclusions.

Unlike Diamonds, there is no accepted grading system for colored gemstones. But Gemvara has very high standards for its gemstones, which are all hand selected for their beauty. Our AAA quality gemstones are very well cut, with lively brilliance and very good polish. Gemvara selects premium medium-toned gems in each variety so that they complement each other in styles with multiple gems. Most gemstones we sell are eye-clean, which means there are no visible inclusions. An exception is Emerald, which due to its nature is very rare without some inclusions, called its "jardin." In pieces with multiple gemstones, we take extra care to make sure all the stones in the piece are well-matched. Some gem varieties have less-intense colors in smaller sizes, including Aquamarine, Morganite, Tanzanite, Rhodolite, and Yellow Sapphire.

Gemvara only offers color enhanced gemstones that have been treated in trade-accepted ways to maximize their beauty. Amethyst, Aquamarine, Blue Sapphire, Citrine, Ruby, Tanzanite, and Yellow Sapphire have been enhanced by heat. Black Diamond and Blue Topaz have been enhanced by irradiation. All of our white center diamonds are accompanied with a grading report from either the Gemological Institute of America or the American Gem Society. We stand behind the quality of the gems we sell 100%.

We only sell gems we would want to purchase ourselves. When shopping for a colored gemstone on Gemvara, you can assume the gems are enhanced by trade-accepted practices, like heating. Some varieties are almost always enhanced, like Ruby, Emerald, Sapphire, Blue Topaz, Black Onyx, Tanzanite, Black Diamond, and Citrine. (If you prefer an unenhanced gemstone, in particular, a fine ruby, emerald, or sapphire, you should expect to pay a premium and receive a report from a well-respected laboratory like the Gemological Institute of America confirming the gem's natural origin.) Gemvara does not sell gemstones that have been treated in non-standard ways, like bulk diffusion, glass filling, lasering, or coatings.

It isn’t always possible to pinpoint a mined gemstone’s origin after it has been cut and polished. We choose our suppliers carefully and do our best to ensure every gemstone we sell is responsibly mined. Gemvara is a member of the American Gem Trade Association, and we support its high ethical standards.

moissanite mineral is incredibly rare to find in nature, so the majority of moissanite used to grow gem-quality-stones is laboratory-created. Because the material used to create the gemstone is synthetic, moissanite is considered a “Lab grown silicon carbide gemstone,” whereas other lab gemstones are grown using the same materials and environmental conditions found in nature. Shipping & Returns


We offer free express shipping to the United States and Canada. All other shipping is managed by International Checkout. The cost is calculated after selecting International Checkout in your shopping bag. For orders outside of the United States, Canada and APO/FPO addresses, we have partnered with International Checkout, a respected third-party service that acts as your shopping concierge. To place your international order, just add the jewelry you would like to purchase to your Shopping Bag and select the "International Checkout" option. Your order will be transferred automatically for processing. International Checkout handles payment by international credit card or PayPal in your choice of 33 currencies. They will receive your order in the United States and then ship it to your country within a matter of days. You can arrange to pre-pay customs and duties at a guaranteed rate if you so choose. Although shipping to Canada is free, just like shipping to the United States, we charge Canadian VAT, duty, and an import handling fee. This extra cost for importing to Canada is calculated in the shopping bag when you place your order. Shipping to Canada may also add a day or two to our estimated delivery date.

By Canadian law, Gemvara is required to collect the applicable Canadian federal and provincial goods & services tax on orders sent to Canada. The taxes required will be calculated in the shopping bag.

If you decide to return an order shipped to Canada, the Canadian authorities, at their sole discretion, may remit back to Gemvara all, or a portion of, the taxes collected. Gemvara will refund to the customer 100% of all refunded taxes. Due to the fact that the Canadian authorities control the timing of any refund, the customer will receive two separate credits: one occurring at the time the returned merchandise is received by Gemvara and the second when Gemvara receives a refund of taxes from the Canadian authorities.

The time between the day you place your order and the estimated delivery date is the time it takes for our jewelers to handcraft your piece. Everything we ship is sent via next or second-day air and cannot be further expedited. We promise it will be worth the wait.

Yes, we do ship to APO addresses. We recommend placing your order at least two weeks time previous to your needed delivery date.

We offer a 101-day satisfaction guaranteed return policy for all made-to-order jewelry in its original condition. This does not extend to sample sale designs. Once your piece is returned, we will provide a full refund. The only fee you are responsible for the return shipping. No. Sample sale items are not covered under our 101-day return or resize policies. We are able to provide these items at such a steep discount due to the as-seen nature of the product. Yes, you can return an engraved piece.

After we receive your returned order, we will inspect it and issue a credit within 24 to 48 hours. Your card issuer will determine how long the money takes to be refunded.

For all purchases valued at $10,000 or less, we provide the option of two or three monthly installment payments. This offer is interest free and financed directly through Gemvara. Once we receive your first payment, our jewelers will begin to craft your piece. Your subsequent payments will be charged automatically to your credit card.

Resized & Repairs


Gemvara offers a one-year warranty on every purchase. If there are any problems with the quality of your jewelry, we'll repair it free of charge. If you damage a piece, we are happy to repair it for a reasonable fee. For assistance with a repair, please click here.

Gemvara offers one free resize within 101-days of delivery (excluding sample sale items) – all you have to pay is shipping. Resizing typically takes between 10 and 14 days. If a significant size change is necessary or your piece cannot be resized without damaging the integrity of the design, our jewelers may need to remake your ring. This is covered under our 101-day policy, but can be costly outside of that time frame. For assistance with a resize, please click here.

Unlike our usual made-to-order designs, sample sale items have already been crafted in the listed size. To maintain the best possible prices on these items, we are unable to extend our 101 day free resize policy, though we may be able to make slight adjustments at a reasonable cost. To determine if this is a possibility for you, contact one of our Jewelry Consultants at 1.800.436.8803 or careteam@gemvara.com. Please keep in mind that all sample sale items are final sale, and you will not be able to return your ring if we are unable to accommodate sizing. Sample sale designs are first come, first serve, and cannot be held while determining if a ring can be sized.

We don’t recommend it. Any modifications made to your original piece by jewelers other than Gemvara will void your warranty.





Jewelry Care


To keep your gems sparkling, clean them when dust and fingerprints dim their brilliance. For everyday cleaning, we recommend mild dish soap and warm water, using a toothbrush to scrub behind the stone where dust can collect. The best way to clean fine jewelry is in a bowl of warm water with a few drops of ordinary dish detergent. Using an old toothbrush or other soft brush, scrub gently behind the stone where dust and soap can collect. Then just rinse and pat dry with a soft cloth. A home ultrasonic cleaner can be used to clean ruby, sapphire, diamond, amethyst, citrine, garnets, and unadorned gold and platinum jewelry but shouldn't be used to clean emerald, peridot, pearls or silver jewelry. When in doubt, don't use it.

To protect the beauty of your jewelry, don't keep it in a tangle in a jewelry box. Remember, gems can scratch metal or each other. Store each piece separately or wrap each one in tissue paper or a soft cloth. When you travel, make sure your jewelry pieces don't rub against each other in your bag.

Be careful when removing your jewelry to wash your hands. Don't leave your jewelry on the rim of the sink where it can slip down the drain! Remove gemstone rings and bracelets before vigorous exercise or working with your hands. Some gem varieties might be damaged with a sharp blow. When taking off your rings, don't pull them off by the gemstone: this won't damage the gem but it can, over time, stretch the metal that holds it in place, making the setting less secure.

Keep jewelry away from chlorine and other household chemicals. You won't have to clean jewelry as often if you put it on after applying hairspray, perfume, and cosmetics.
