When he and other legendary Viking explores ventured into the Atlantic searching for the new world, they used a naturally polarizing iolite lens to determine the exact position of the sun in order to navigate safely. It is violet blue from one angle, clear as water from another and a honey yellow from the top. This characteristic makes it difficult to cut an iolite because in the wrong shape, iolite's color will not be properly displayed.
